Making larger stuff by hand
Sometimes you get to make bigger stuff, like doors, by hand. And I often get the question how long it takes, and if it wouldn't be easier if I got some more machines?!
Now, I don't mind using machines to rough stuff out, but if the machine does the final touch then what do I do? Is it really my work, or is it the machines work? Can't I saw straight and for that reason I need to get a tool?
Obviously a machine that is dedicated for a particular task will do a stellar job, and much faster then I can ever get it done. But that was kind of the reason I didn't continue my woodworking career after trade school (2 years learning every machine you can find in a modern woodworking shop) and a short job as a boat builder (Linden).
I was never driven by speed, more by the feeling of doing something myself.
Anyhow, back to the doors!
The doors are "twin doors", meaning they open like a window without anything in-between. They are not of equal size, but the "main" door is slightly larger and the other door is mostly kept shut, but may be opened to get a bigger opening.
These were built in my shop and then transported on-site. In order to hang the doors, and to make it easier to paint and do some final touches I used a little bit of my shop wall to act as a support. You take what you have... :)
So, how long did it take? I don't know exactly, and to me it does not matter. If people want to buy my hand-made stuff, and I get money enough to keep buying lumber and make more stuff I'm happy!
